How do you like your doilies? Stitched and stiffened, chopped and changed, or pinned and patched.
There are dozens of ways to repurpose lacy doilies and embroidered napkins and we will have all these examples of creative doily upcycling at the "I say Doilies, You say Doyleys" exhibition at Gleaners Inc.

Ever wondered what to do with those little pocket-sized wonders from grandma’s linen closet? Beyond the protection of fine furniture and show-boating your great aunt’s needlework skills, exactly what is there to do with a doily?

Well, Melbourne’s leading craftisans provide answers with ‘I Say Doilies, You Say Doyleys’, a new exhibition opening at Gleaners Inc. in March. Transforming these handmade fancywork treats into new, sometimes functional and always fantastic artworks, the show will feature doilies as its only common thread.

Contributing to the exhibition is noted textile artist Louise Saxton, local makers Camille Condon from ‘Curlypops’ {her gorgeous brooches and hair clips pictured in store now} and Rayna Fahey from ‘Radical Cross Stitch’ and from NSW, ‘The Quilt Lady’ Melissa Ninham and of course, in-house maker Liz Jones, aka ‘Betty Jo’.

"Lacy crocheted doilies or embroidered fancywork napkins often sit unloved in a basket at the opp shop. I like to give them a new life, but maintain their decorative aesthetic and functional use. Says Jones, “Although I chop up the doilies for my work, I'm not destroying the memories attached, but refashioning them for others to enjoy.”

You’ll never look at a doyley in the same way again!

Gleaners Inc. is the latest project from master crafter, Liz Jones aka Betty Jo. Just freshly opened for trading, Jones has found a permanent home to showcase her creations and vintage finds in the coolest precinct of Brunswick. Her new store is dedicated to all things handmade, reused, up-cycled and remastered. It’s a hope chest of beautiful and quirky things to adorn both you and your home, spotlighting Betty Jo’s unique linoleum wearables and decorative pieces (as featured in Design Files, and also available at Craft Victoria and other great stores).

Gleaners Inc. operates as Jones’ studio as well as store, providing a neighbourhood outlet for like-minded makers in the community as well as the perfect location for Betty Jo. So, come check it out !

The Doily Exhibition

Thanks everyone for spreading the word about the "Doily Thang". The dates are now official: Opening night is March 16th and it will run to April 6th. {or a wee bit longer if all is looking peachy). Opening night will involve drinks and creative mingling. Mark it in your diaries!

::Drop your creations into Gleaners Inc. or post to Liz's place the week beginning Monday 12th March. email gleanersinc@gmail.com for opening hours and my address.

::If your work will be for sale, Gleaners Inc. will be taking a small commission (20%), so price it accordingly.

::Pieces should not be too large. We are only a little shop!

::All mediums accepted. If your work is sculptural, let me know so I can organise plinths etc.

Submissions are open for a new exhibition in the Stairway to Nowhere Gallery at Gleaners Inc.
Start collecting doilies {or doyleys} and repurpose those beauties into something gorgeous!

Colour Collections Workshops at Gleaners Inc.

Make your own Colour Collection Shadow Boxes with collected bric-a-brac in all the colours of the rainbow.

We are still enjoying the somewhat cruisy January vibe in Brunswick.

The street signs think it's winter already, but we have many more days of sun to come me thinks!

There has been quite a bit of making going on behind the scenes, some cute new Bubba clothing (as well as big girl's pretties) has arrived from Middlemost,

and our lovely neighbour OK OK has a sale on the coolest bobby socks this side of the Merri creek!

New/Old finds

I begrudgingly agreed to drive hubby to work in Richmond the other day. The boy child specifically requested we do not stop at Abbotsford Salvo's as often I can loose over an hour there...but he didn't say no to garage sales. Especially one where a very old dude was emptying out his ancient garage!
Now this cool metal display cabinet will be living at Gleaners Inc. Probably displaying some colourful Curlypops and Shagpile goodies. I also picked up a big set of ceder pigeonholes... thank goodness for the hatchback!

I also rescued some concrete friends for reading gnome (who himself was a nature strip rescue) from a skip in Preston. Kirsten from Each to Own asked "how could anyone put a gnome in a skip? gnomes have feelings too...".

Well now these guys and their froggy friend will greet you at the door of Gleaners Inc. happily relieved that they won't be ending their lives buried at the dump!

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this dream come true in 2011.At the beginning of the year if someone had told us we would be running a cute little shop by October we would have not believed them.
But being firm believers in grabbing an opportunity when it presents itself, we took the plunge.
No one can say what next year will bring, but I'm sure it will be a fun, if not sometimes bumpy, but ultimately rewarding ride!

We had a lovely evening at Gleaners Inc. last night, sipping champagne, chatting and looking at all the ducky designs. There were 11 exhibiting designers/ artists /sculptors in the show, and it was so great to see their creative take on the theme "Flight of the Ducks".

Big thanks to all the fantastic creative people that are a part of the first show at Gleaners Inc.

Ducks in Flight

Looking forward to hanging the selection of Handcrafted Flying Ducks for the "Flight of the Ducks " exhibition this Friday. As most submissions are still to arrive I'm in for a few days of surprises!
We now have a wall of pegboard at Gleaners Inc. I love pegboard. It's perfect for hanging stuff....especially DUCKS!

If you are not into wall ducks we have a limited range of these gorgeous Polly Pratt "Flying Ducks" dresses in store. Still miffed I couldn't squash into the size 10 . It was a case of "in your dreams" Liz!
Everyone is invited to the shop on Friday afternoon for refreshments and a sweet 10% discount on all purchases. It's a great reason to come on over if you haven't yet visited!

The fairy lights have been turned on in the window , so now it's officially full steam ahead to Christmas.

Yesterday, the shop was bustling with visitors. Cathie dropped off some yummy muffins.

Cathy and Lou pedalled over and sorted out some gifts!

Bec and her gal dropped off some goodies including a bag and a skirt for me and some sweet girls dresses.

My Gorgeous 21 yo nephew came in with his buddies and picked out gifts for his Mum and sister. With out any prompting he chose a Curly Pops sunnies case and brooch, and a Kitty Came Home clutch purse.

My sister and niece in Darwin are going to be in for a colourful crafty treat this year!

We have also been catering for those *wintery* gifts to travel to the northern Hemisphere, like cosy Gaye Abandon Hottie Jumpers and other woolly treats.

There is still plenty of time to get your gifts sorted....and as much as the term "Stocking filler" annoys me, there are so many to choose from at Gleaners Inc. ...and of course it's so much better to shop at small indie retailers and choose handmade gifts that are unique and made with love!

I was getting Bunting separation anxiety yesterday after three lengths of the Curly Pops bunting was sold.

Windows at Gleaners Inc.

Yesterday we received a choice booty of hand made dresses, skirts, tops and accessories from Middlemost Clothing. Great vintage fabrics and repurposed kitchen linen with a suitable sprinkling of kitsch. The Rosella wrap skirt went straight in the window..........

.....as did the Melbourne skyline tank top and fantastic geo print skirt!
Violet the shop dummy is looking very pleased with herself. You must pop in and see the whole range.
It's a vintage fabric lovers dream! I will be booking my in house model for some more pictures soon.

Look who came into Gleaners today...Wednesday Adams sans wig! Wednesday agreed to show off the Betty Jo Sugar Skull Clock as we are celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead this week.

There maybe a bit of trick or treating tonight with my miniature Jason from Friday The Thirteenth, but there will be absolutely no mention of the Cup this year. Sorry.
So to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the end of blogtoberfest, and the fact that I haven't had a GIVEAWAY yet on the Gleaners Inc. blog there is a Betty Jo Sugar Skull brooch up for grabs. It will be very muchos like these guys.

Day of the Dead Altar in the Gleaners Inc. window. Please note the unintentional reflection of the glorious Spanish mission building opposite. This was once the Brunswick Markets and has now been preserved in all it's brick and stucco glory!

I have been potting up succulents in odd pots, tins and teapots to bring some greenery to the industrial facade of Gleaners Inc.. They were going to be for show, but sure enough people have been asking to buy them. Last week I sold five! So from now on they are officially for sale.

Mr "Wise Old Owl" ( as his mate named him) took a fancy to my macrame owl today. The Owl probably predates this dude by a good 10 years!

Some gorgeous crocheted bead necklaces just arrived at Gleaners Inc. today. Made and delivered by Julianne, one of the famous Sister Outlaws.

Julianne borrowed Thumbelina's crochet hook to create these limited edition necklaces....so you can imagine how many teeny tiny stitches went into each piece.

Today at Gleaners Inc.we had a visit from the upcycled textile queens of Melbourne, Gaye and Melanie.
Gaye dropped off some amazing "Gaye Abandon" homewares, purses and her famous Hottie Jumpers.
Melanie delivered her cutealicious cloth book pictures and refashioned "Textile Allsorts" T-shirts.
Talk about an infusion of colour and texture.

Amazing table runners backed with old grandpa style tartan dressing gowns .

We are very lucky to have an awesome collection of Greg Mann Jewellery at Gleaners Inc.
Greg's jewellery has been constructed from recycled materials gleaned from opportunity shops and Trash 'n' Treasure markets. Cutlery of all shapes and sizes, souvenir teaspoons and plastic toys.

I am now wearing my blue parrot earrings everyday!!!!!

In his "Animated" series, parts of toys have been used to resemble wall mounted trophies....but not in a creepy, big bad hunter way...more frivolous, fun and decorative.

I finally met the very delightful Lucy King today while she dropped them off, and after following her blog and loving her stylish house on The Design Files, it was great meeting her in real life. And just as I suspected, she is the nicest person!

We un-officially opened the doors at Gleaners Inc. today, and yippee, here is our first customer.
She wanted to be incognito, but there's no secrets here at Gleaners Inc.!

Madame Anna aka Polly Pratt picked up the " Rosy Owl Cuckoo Clock" and I am sure it couldn't have gone to a better home.
Tomorrow I will also have the doors un-officially open, so pop in and say hello.

Rosy Owl Cuckoo Clock

This Rosy Owl Cuckoo clock was made for a customer who, with out any warning, seemed to magically dissapear off the face of the earth. One minute this particular clock was "Just Perfect", the next minute..silence, nothing, not a peep! I started to think I had imagined all the daily emails regarding the "Birthday Clock".

But it's turned out fine, as this once homeless clock can now grace the wall of Gleaners Inc. and hopefully find a real life customer.
